Where do you begin?
You can read this wall from left to right. Its meaning may travel the other way. A universe taking shape. A gorilla’s gaze. A thread of DNA. A human figure trying to understand. Perhaps you see order emerging. Perhaps you see an order that was already there, long before anyone gave it a name. Look again. Where have you placed yourself?
I — Beginnings
Chaos?
We call it a beginning. We picture an explosion. But does a universe taking shape resemble chaos—or an order beyond our intuition?
- Boltzmann · Entropy
- Entropy gives change a direction. Across the universe, structures form and dissolve. What looks like disorder may still obey a law.
- Schrödinger · Probability
- The equation describes how a quantum state evolves. Its predictions make room for uncertainty. How much certainty do we need before we call something ordered?
- The galaxy
- Long before there was a witness, gravity was shaping matter into galaxies and stars. No one was there to call it beautiful. Or chaotic.
S = k ln Ω
iħ ∂ψ/∂t = Hψ
II — Kinship
Nature
Life branches, adapts, and continues. We draw the boundaries, then find ourselves on both sides.
- The gorilla
- A familiar face. A different branch of our ancestry. What makes us place ourselves above it—or imagine that it stands closer to chaos?
- Charles Darwin
- Darwin revealed how natural selection shapes life across generations. The tree has branches, not a summit. Where does that leave us?
III — The Thread
Within It
A helix. An infinity. A line the eye can follow without finding an end.
DNA carries inheritance through generations. Here, its form also suggests continuity: life extending beyond the individual.
Black and white intertwine. Try to follow one without the other.
The human figure stands before the thread, studying something it belongs to.
An observer. A participant. Perhaps a disturbance.
IV — The Human Gaze
Order?
We measure, name, explain. We alter what we touch. It can be difficult to tell where understanding ends and control begins.
- Jane Goodall
- Goodall’s patient observation changed how we understood chimpanzees—and ourselves. Her presence asks something of the viewer: can we look closely without making ourselves the centre?
- Dirac · Beyond intuition
- An equation helped lead physics toward the prediction of antimatter. A pattern became visible through mathematics. Was the order in the symbols, or in what they allowed us to see?
- Euler · A meeting
- Five fundamental constants meet in a single relationship. We recognise elegance in it. What is it that we are recognising?
- The leaves
- A leaf grows without knowing our equations. Its order needs no witness.
(iγ·∂ − m)ψ = 0
e^iπ + 1 = 0
If nature is order,
what are we?
